About SOMIRA

Straits of Mare Island Rowing Association (SOMIRA) is a community oriented, non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of Maritime History in the Vallejo area, and participating in whaleboat activities, including racing events.

We own two fiberglass whaleboats (Monomoy style) named Lalla Rookh, and MINSY Rose. We also own two wooden whaleboats named Faith and Buckingham, donated to us by California Maritime Academy. We have use of a 3rd fiberglass whaleboat Bridgetine which is owned by Gregg Miller.

SOMIRA hosts and participates in a number of annual events that benefit the greater Vallejo community, including:

  • Community Benefit Row. We solicit sponsors for this event and afterward, we distribute the money raised to the selected local non-profit groups.
  • SOMIRA fundraising crab and pasta feeds which helps us raise funds for general club expenses, such as boat maintenance.
  • Turkey Drive to help supply food for those in need.

We also assist other organizations in their events, as well as, participating in other fundraising efforts, community parades and fairs.

Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum – we provide rowers to help with their annual Garden Tour fundraiser
Barkitecture – the annual fundraiser for the Benicia Vallejo Humane Society – we provide assistance to help staff the bar, serve wine and provide other support for this event
Great Vallejo Race – we help the Vallejo Yacht Club with their pancake breakfast provided to the sailors in this annual event.
Public Boat Launch – Brinkman’s – we clean the parking lot weekly, logging 5-10 hours per week of litter and weed removal as a service to the City of Vallejo
