4/2/10  SOMIRA—Straits of Mare Island Rowing Association is celebrating our 10th year as a community oriented rowing association.

Many of our rowers have been involved in the sport for 20 years or more, and some are veterans of the now defunct Vallejo Whaleboat Regatta, which took place every October on the Vallejo Waterfront for over 23 years.

We offer the opportunity to anyone who wants to try rowing on the Vallejo waterfront. If you decide you like it, you can join our association.  We offer competitive racing as well as recreational opportunities, something for everyone.

We compete throughout the Bay Area as part of the Bay Area Whaleboat Rowing Association (BAWRA), racing against clubs from San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda.  Some rowers from BAWRA recently competed in Australia, and SOMIRA has had teams travel to New Bedford to compete in their annual Independence Day Whaleboat Races.

We are involved in the community in a number of ways. We clean the Public Boat Launch area weekly and provide support for other non-profit groups with their fundraisers. We have a charity row on the Delta from Sacramento to Brannan Island each year, soliciting sponsors and selecting local organizations as recipients of funds we receive. We collect turkeys for distribution to local organizations for Thanksgiving and we donate to the Community Christmas Card each year.

We are a large family.

SOMIRA is sponsoring the first race of the 2010 season for BAWRA on Saturday, April 17th from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

Come to the seawall and cheer for your local teams!
